TUSCANY LAGOON

AN ITALIAN UNIQUE "TROPICAL" FLAT

WATCH THE VIDEO OF THIS TRIP

Just off the Tyrrhenian Sea lies an exclusive fishing experience waiting for you along the Tuscan coast.   This is the Lagoon of Orbetello.

A protected WWF Oasis, Orbetello is a biodiverse paradise drawing international bird watchers to discover the pink flamingos, egrets, herons, and osprey who stalk prey in these shallow waters.

With Italy on the Fly as your guide you can join them and pursue the prizes that lurk below the surface.

SEA BASS

Hunting the powerful mediterranean sea bass in these waters is an unforgettable experience.   They are big and strong with aggressive takes on the surface.  Stalking these fish from the boat on the 27 square kilometres (over 10 square miles) is challenging and technical on the fly but very rewarding. If the wind is up or luck is against us, we can also spin cast with lures for a change of tactic. The real beauty of this experience is you will be among the very few anglers experiencing this dream as these waters are off limits to other recreational fishermen.

TRADITION

We access the lagoon by the grace of The Pescatori di Orbetello, a fishermen trust that was granted exclusive rights to this water in the 14th Century when humble fishermen saved the life of the Pope after a shipwreck in 1376. Through many generations they have tightly managed these waters using only ancient traditional methods ensuring that the natural stocks of sea bass, bream and mullet along with eels,   crabs, and shrimp thrive in harmony with the ecosystem. It is a remarkable story of sustainability and remains of primary importance to the local economy. The Pescatori di Orbetello are notoriously resistant to granting fishing rights to outsiders so we feel fortunate to have earned an access agreement and relish our time guiding on the massive lagoon.

HOTEL

Our partner is a villa-style hotel a few minutes from the village of Orbetello.  With a lovely pool area and restaurant it offers Tuscan countryside charm.   Full of comfortable spots to relax with large modern rooms and apartments complete with wifi and air conditioning.  We love to relax by the pool with a refreshing aperitivo followed by traditional Tuscan cooking from the popular tavern.

APARTMENT

For those preferring a more independent option in the heart of seaside Orbetello we’ve secured a large apartment within the old town. Located in the village centre with plenty of historical places,  old streets, bars, restaurants and much more, everything is right on your doorstep.   With two bedrooms, complete kitchen and two bathrooms plus a lounge it allows total immersion into the rhythms of life in the middle of this charming Italian village.

EXPLORE

If you take a break from fishing, Tuscany offers endless excursions from Orbetello starting with exploring the historic village itself.   The central old town is dedicated to walking instead of driving, so wandering the narrow streets within the ancient walls to discover local shops, little cafes, and historic old squares is a safe and charming adventure. After a little shopping and a gelato (or aperitivo), you’ll never want to leave. Heading further afield can land you in Rome or Florence in under two hours, or hit a beautiful beach for a classic Mediterranean day of salt and sea on a lounge chair.
